rare problem

I'm currently using ubuntu 16.04. I can boot to the GUI intermittently. On
reboot, I'm experiencing long pauses during start-up intermittently,
unpredictably, and that i haven't been able to turn off Plymouth to see
what's causing the pauses. These pauses freeze up the whole PC and I have
to do a cold shutdown hoping to go to the GUI. When the GUI loads, it's hit
or miss. I've been all over the forums and all over the IRC chat. It seems
I'm the only person with this problem.
specs: nvidia gtx 970, amdfx 4130 quad core cpu x4
thank you
