moving hard drive to a new system

It will almost certianly will be OK to move the disk as Linux goes through its own hardware detection while booting.
A desktop as a NAS could use quite a lot of watts and hence $s running 24/7 over the year. For instance my old box running the TV uses 120~150watts which would be about $300NZD in electricity over the year if left always on.
My 3 node NAS gluster which is 3 x Dell 990s use 33watts each = 100watts but I dont run it 24/7 only when the ovirt vm cluster is up.
If you have a wifi router it may already have a usb3 port on it and something like an asus 68U uses 10watts = $20NZD / year, way cheaper.
