Those meta packages are most likely better to get the full flavours, but
the already mentioned meta-packages

at least provide the /usr/share/xsessions/ desktop files. So maybe he
installed something different by a GUI. I guess we should provide
exactly what he should run by command line.

First, for testing purpose start with the lightest DE

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

then check if you get the choices mentioned by Nils.

If this should have solved the issue contiue with installing other DEs
you want to use, e.g.

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-desktop ubuntu-gnome-desktop
