the new "software" in 16.04 doesn't show all software?

I've heard about this improved "software" (to update and load new
software), because the old one was oh so bad....
to me it seems like a step back. I type in "clang" and there's
nothing..... so went back to the commandline.
Is there something I missed? I didn't see any advanced menu option to
enable some expert mode.
I also noted when new updates come in, i need to click on each of them
to load them. That seems cumbersome.
Then i found "Ubuntu Software Center", same icon as "Ubuntu Software",
and that's the trusty one I like.
Really seems like a step backwards there.
