Thank you for your reply Nathan.

I can see my other laptop via Dolphin but it uses Fish to share files. 
I'll look into setting up a Samba share.

I have KDE connect installed but it's an older version from the Ubuntu 
repositories. I can ping to and from the Android tablet but not much 
else. I downloaded the latest version but it's not recommended that it 
be installed by the user. Perhaps 14.10 will include the latest version?

That sounds like a good option. I use SSH frequently to log into my 
Raspberry pi.
