I think this is an indication that your scanner driver is incompatible 
with the libusb version or there is a bug in the driver.

And if one program fails to find the scanner due to such an error, I 
would assume that all other scanner programs would fail as well, even if 
the error messages may be different.

Two options:
1. In the configuration for your VM select the "storage" section. There 
should be an entry for a virtual CD/DVD drive in the storage tree. If 
you select that drive, you can select a disk image or you can select the 
"Host drive". If you select the "Host drive", you should have direct 
access to the Windows CD.

2. You could create a ISO file from the Windows CD with a command like

sudo dd if=/dev/sr0 of=windows-cd.iso

in a terminal which would give you a a file "windows-cd.iso" in your 
current directory. You can then select that file as the virtual CD 
instead of the "Host drive" in the VM configuration.
