Setting Up Ubuntu on Lenovo W500

I am having a lot of problems in setting up ubuntu on my W500:

Problems with scanners, virtual box and wine


Setting up scanner on W500. Scanner Epson Perfection 3490

Scanner Utility.This program fails . The error message disappears to 
fast to read but I think if fails to find the scanner

XSANE Failed to open the scanner with invalid argument> 
snapscan:libusb:002:008

The last three digits changed depending on which usb port the scanner 
was plugged into.

Simple Scan
Unable to connect to scanner

Scanlite
Opening the selected scanner failed. (an intermediate message was too 
quick to see.

VirtualBox.

This appeared to install correctly and I was able to create a virtual 
machine, but was unable to connect to the DVD drive to load windows XP. 
How do I make the XP set up disk available to an XP virtual machine?

Wine.
I tried installing the windows software for the scanner but I was unable 
to start the programs, despite icons being placed on the desk top during 
the install.
I have several other programs (WinBMD, BMDVerify and FreeReg) which I 
need to use, but so fare none of them work in Wine and I cannot install 
Windows XP in the virtualbod machine.


I would be grateful for any advice or help.
