I had no sound as well. I figured out two ways to solve this, the first was
to uninstall pulseaudio and let the system default reset back to alsa, the
other was to install gdm, which I did not have before. You may have a
different problem. Check your volume with pulseaudio as well as alsamixer
and make sure nothing is muted
