Hmm.  Some googling suggests that if it's grayed-out, it's because the
timer is in fact in the panel, and only one instance of the applet can
be present.  If I try to add a 2nd timer, even to a different panel, I
can select the timer applet, but the "add" button then gets grayed out.

If you've got multiple panels, maybe the timer got added to the wrong
panel?  You can use the panel preferences window to check what items are
contained in each panel.

Visually, the applet appears in a (horizontal) panel as a vertical
rectangle.  Mine also has a thin vertical line on either side of the
rectangle, though I'm not sure that's part of the applet or something
the panel adds.  But playing around with it, I see that the color of the
rectangle depends on what style you're using (Settings -> Settings
Manager -> Appearance).  I use Xfce-saltlake and get a light gray
rectangle.  But with Greybird (the default for Xubuntu IIRC), the
rectangle is almost black.  So depending on the color of your panel, it
might be hard to spot.
