Exactly the same problem here, same solution implemented. In my case I
have an Epson Stylus Photo 950 that will be used until the cartridges
are empty. Hooked up and ready to print is a Brother HL-3040CN.
The Epson is connected to a USB port of my server. The Brother is also
driven by the server/CUPS, but is plugged into the network. It does also
have a USB connection but you probably can't get at the administration
server with a web browser unless it's plugged into the network.
The Brother works beautifully with CUPS and the Brother supplied drivers
but there is no Gutenprint support for it at present. Still, I only used
Gutenprint for photo printing and since I'm taking those to a shop for
printing in future it's no big problem for me.
