1. is you pc set up as a wired or wireless client to your router?
2. is it set up as a dhcp client or with a static IP?
3. when you click on that network icon, what does it display?
4. output of lspci please.
5. output of  ifconfig (no args)
6. if wireless, output of iwconfig (no args).
