issue booting system after kernel update

I think it was a kernel update that has caused this, but I can't get it
fixed.

I've tried:

sudo grub-update

and

sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

and

sudo grub-install --force /dev/sda

and

sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub2

and the system still boots to the grub menu, but it just sits there.  I can
manually select a kernel and boot.

Any ideas on how to fix this.
