Depending on UPS type -- if it's a "smart" UPS, which can communicate
its status to the server by for example serial or USB cable, then you
might be able to configure UPS software daemon to shut down the server
properly, when battery is running out of charge.

For ext* filesystems check the tune2fs utility and the mount-count
parameters, which can be set per filesystem.

If 1) you buy a "smart" UPS and 2) software for Linux for that UPS
exists (apcupsd, for example), then your server can be shut down
properly before UPS battery runs out of charge.
