This is useful information. So things should just work. That means
something is broken, which was probably not clear to the OP.
Then indeed I agree with Avi, the OP should either help in finding out
what exactly is wrong, reinstall, or take his laptop to someone who can
fix it for him.
Regarding the garage anology: I can imagine people see this mailing
list as the 'garage' since it is meant to support Ubuntu users.
