Sorry, I thought you were asking for help.  By trying to use the
alternated CD, however, you are not going the normal route for
installing.  If one were following one's nose one would download the
normal desktop install.

Easy instructions on http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop as I stated.

The reason I asked this is that the first time I encountered a text
display providing options I was confused, expecting to be able to
click over the OK button, or whatever it was, and only eventually
realising that I had to tab to the right field.  The effect is that
nothing appears to work unless one tries the tab key.  I just wanted
to make sure that you had not fallen into the same trap as I did.  As
I said I have not recently used the alternate CD so I don't know
whether this could have been the problem or not.  Did you try the tab
key?

As I said I am only trying to help, which I cannot do unless I know at
what point it failed.
