exactly ...
the first one would have been right for an lxde session. 
i assume when you logged into lightdm and ended up in the unity session
lightdm updated the dmrc file properly, when you then switched back to
ldxm it didnt update the file to read "session = LXDE" as it should.

you do set the default display manager when running i.e.: 

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm 
(or respectively sudo dpkg-reconfigure lxdm)

this sets a value in the debconf database which should be
respected by all packages (i.e. if it points to lxdm and lxdm is
installed, no other package should change it to something else in
theory)
