xubuntu 12.10 on core duo imac - only boots via alt/option key then select disk

I pulled out an old core duo iMac and put xubuntu 12.04 x32 on it. When it
boots I get the disk not found icon. If I boot, then press the alt key to
show the bootable disks, it shows me a "windows" disk, which I then press
enter on as it is the only option, it then boots. How do I get it to boot
without needing to do this?
I then got xubuntu 12.10 x32 - then realized before installing that the
system still had a guid partition so I booted up an os x install disk and
repartitioned with master boot record partition. I installed 12.10, but I
still get the disk not found and the alt key at boot does work again
scenario...
Thanks,
Wes
