Alt tab question for 12.04 LTS

Actually the machine I'm sitting at right now is logged on 
with Gnome  instead of Gnome Classic or Gnome (No Effect) 
and it works fine on it. The machine my kids use is logging 
on with Gnome Classic rather than Gnome Classic (No Effect) 
it also works fine on that machine. It is mostly a curiosity 
thing. I am trying to figure out why it works on some 
machines and not on others. I suppose it also could be 
hardware. I'm not on site where the two that don't work are 
located but I think both have usb keyboards and the ones 
that work do not.
