I don't know if this is helpful (as I believe earlier in the thread you
said you are running Ubuntu 10.04) but I recently successfully installed
Google Earth on an Ubuntu 12.04 system using the procedure at

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GoogleEarth#Using_make-googleearth-package

I used this procedure mainly because it's a heck of a lot easier to remove
a .deb (even a self-assembled one) than some of the other options.

I didn't look to see whether I was actually installing the absolute
latest/greatest version, but what I installed worked, except for a few
complaints about various kinds of polygons not being supported by my video
card. I clicked "OK" on the warnings and it proceeded to do what I wanted
anyway.

If you haven't tried that procedure yet, it might be worth your time. I
can't test it easily on 10.04 here as I just finally upgraded my last 10.04
LTS system to 12.04 LTS.
