I am running Unity with two monitors and the launcher is in on the left
hand side of the LH monitor. It may have something to do with which
monitor is the primary monitor for booting. My setup is my noteobook
with a second monitor where the LH monitor is the notebook LCD display.

The number of workspaces is configurable in gconf. It is under
apps->metacity-general->num_workspaces. I have not figured out how to
get it to display the workspaces in one row, however.

I do not like it either, but it does same screen real estate which I
think is the intent. Mac style menus on large screens with small
windows is annoying, but I can live with it.
