Like Liam wrote, you should make the file runnable. That would be the
command
chmod +x AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.bin
./AdbeRdr9.4.2-1_i486linux_enu.bin

If the version from the repo doesn't work, it is unlikely that the
version downloaded from Adobe will work. After all it is the same
version. Then it is probably a feature of that portfolio of files which
requires Windows for some reason.
