Even though this is OT for this particular thread:
1. I presume that grub1'll be removed from the repositories at some
point, whether it's for 12.04 or 12.10 or ..., we'll see.
2. grub2's become quite good, especially with (from what I remember) a
plain-vanilla install like yours.
3. If you don't like Unity, you'll probably not like GNOME 3, so
switching distributions wouldn't be particularly helpful and you're
better off trying Kubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu.
