It sounds more serious than that.  Have you had a look in syslog (use
the Log File Viewer) to see if there are any rude messages when you
logout.  Also look in ~/.xsession-errors (have a look there before
logging out first to see what is at the end of it so you will know
what has been added, if anything, as it tends to be full of warnings).
