Log-in screen gone mission in Ubuntu 11.04

This is more of a display issue. The log-in prompt is actually there but
not being displayed, so if I type in username and password (blindly) I get
to log-in.
I had a look at the /var/log/syslog and the only message which I found
relevant is
gdm-simple-greeter[2952]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.24.4/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5687: widget not within a
GtkWindow
and I've already tried re-installing gdm. How else can I fix the
"gdm-simple-greeter" issue. But why can't I access (or see) CLI with
ctrl+alt+F1 (this shouldn't be a gdm related issue) .
thanks,
-D
