fighting with getting the mic to work for skype

  once upon a time, this worked ago and i'm not sure what i've messed
up.  i'm trying to get skype working on my gateway NV79 laptop running
(approx) ubuntu 10.10 and everything works except for the external
mic that i've plugged in.  i can connect with someone else and hear
them fine over the onboard speakers but they can't hear me at all.

  from memory, i've tried the onboard mic but could never get that to
work so i bought a cheap headset and plugged in just the mic and i
swear that used to work but now anymore.  what can i try?  might i be
missing a required module?  alsactl?  thoughts, anyone?
