Agreed. However, whilst viruses aren't a big problem on linux (yet...)
you can get hacked. I've known a few linux boxes this has happened to,
so it can and does happen. So whilst I also wouldn't bother with
antivirus applications, I would install something like chkrootkit and
regularly run it (via cron for instance. I think it might even set
itself up to do this so all you need to do is make sure you read the
email sent to root on your machine...) to check for signs of invaders.

This is good to know. Maybe my problem is being hacked. I even have
trouble running Mint. The computer has frozen up a few times and
I got an error message stating this:
"Error 18: Selected cylinder exceed maximu supported by BIOS"
This was the type of message I got before I bought the new 1 TB
hard disk. I installed Mint on the new disk and have not added any
additional programs. Only what was installed with the OS.
Anyway Chris, I am going to get chkrookit and follow your advice.
