Thomas, the "Error 18" message is one telling you that the BIOS on
your system can't deal with a dive that large. If so the you haven't
been hacked and checking for a rootkit will be a waste of time.

Apparently that problem with your BIOS has been there for some time,
since the previous drive was also too large for your system's BIOS.
You either need a new BIOS (which may simply be a flash upgrade) or
you need to do a BIOS overlay when installing the new drive. Before
installing your OS. (The overlay software would have come with your
new 1TB drive) That way the drive remaps itself in terms of how it
reports heads and cylinders.

To start with, how old is the BIOS? What year does it report when it
boots up? I have several machines around here that can't go above a
130gb drive because of the BIOS. some of them were able to be flashed
and now use bigger drives. Those that couldn't have been retired or
relegated to being print-servers, etc.
