How to manually install Ubuntu

You do not need the gparted cd. You can format your disk using the
Ubuntu Live CD (I do not use gparted but if it is not available by
default, you can install it).

Once you reach the partitioner's step, choose the manual option and
simply associate swap and / (and any other mountpoint) with
partition's that you had pre-created without ticking the "format"
option.
