cannot install ubuntu on older HP computer

I am trying to install version 10.04 desktop on an 8 year old HP desktop
currently running windows xp.    The computer will not boot from the USB
drive.    I checked the bios and there are only 4 things listed in this
order

removable devices
atapi cd-rom
network boot
hard dive

When i expand removable devices it only shows legacy floppy drives

Do you have any suggestions for me to get this installed?   tia
