cannot install ubuntu on older HP computer

What about installing from CD?  It will obviously boot from that before
the hard drive.

By the way, have you got at least 256MB memory, or you will need the
alternate CD with the text based installer? And you will need 512MB to
get any decent performance from the default GNOME interface.
