There is a GConf key that determines whether Nautilus will use a user's
home directory for the desktop. It can be manipulated using
gconf-editor or the following command at a shell prompt (open Terminal)
or from the run dialog.
gconftool --set --type bool \
/apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir false
