He was likely referring to the Vista Office which could NOT open previous 
version Office files.  I used Open Office on my Kubuntu laptop to translate 
those for two lawyers here in town when they had upgraded to the later Office 
suite for Vista.  As a result, they both now have Kubuntu network systems in 
their offices rather than windoze!  And Chris is correct, MS seems to like to 
FORCE costly upgrades by rendering even their own software incompatible!  The 
Office patch arrived some two months later, ...lawyers don't have the luxury 
of waiting that long to read their own files.  I'd suspect no business does. 
My lawyers were totally paniced!  It was years of files and letters that they 
couldn't access anymore.
