Thanks for your response, Nils. As to the second part which was not 
addressed, where the display does not run, he can boot to recovery 
console, try to fix broken packages, then boot normally, and attempt 
'startx'. Failing which, "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop".
