Half-brightness X.11 with nomodeset in Lucid

Anyone else experimenting with the "nomodeset" kernel parameter in Lucid?

On my Thinkpad X31, it fixes the broken colour palette in the new
"Plymouth" graphical boot sequence, and Googling suggests that it
might help with suspend/resume problems too.

The problem I'm having is that my X session starts to "fade in" with a
gradual transition - as seems fairly normal for Lucid - but it never
makes it all the way to full brightness. It stops in a dim gray state
which leaves the screen unreadable. The only reason I can think of for
this is that I have dropped the colour depth from 16M to 65K colours,
as this gives much snappier graphics performance - especially when
running dual-head, as my 16MB of VRAM cannot manage more than 2 x
1024*768 desktops.
