Losing 10-key pad, then mouse function

I know it sounds stupid, but that's what's happened on 10.04. I had to reboot to 
Windoze -- where I found both still work fine -- to compose this e-mail. Most of 
my passwords contain numbers and I'm having to resort to using the numeral keys 
above the qwerty keys in order to enter them or do much in a spreadsheet. Talk 
about clumsy! It just quit working/responding, regardless of whether the NumLock 
light is toggled on or off. The mouse fails also. I could use Ctrl+W to close 
program windows, but couldn't click the Shutdown/Restart button on top panel. 
Any ideas?
