Yes - I've been playing around with this same camera, and it behaves
the way you describe. However, in 'viewing' mode, it should still be
possible to issue a command to gphoto to capture an image from the
camera.
I've compiled the latest gphoto2, and while it correctly identifies
the camera (the verion shipped with 8.10 does not), it still gives
this error (after unmounting the camera):

I'm starting to think something else besides gphoto2 is to blame -
ptpcam does not work, nor does the 'capture' program (from
sourceforge). I'm thinking libusb or similar, but I'm having a heard
time figuring out the problem.
anyway, I'm giving up for now, but it would be nice to do some
time-lapse and/or motion detection with this thing - it's a nice
camera...
