I've not tried it... that's why I stated: "I wonder if something like
this would work" :-)

I prefer NX: http://www.nomachine.com/ as everything just works. I tried
FreeNX (NX is free BTW) and ran into some issues. So, I've stuck with NX.

NX creates an ssh session to the desktop like VNC. Primary difference is
that it uses a different video:x rather than using video:0 or whatever
the current user is logged in and using (I think that's a correct
description, but may be wrong). So, when you NX to your machine you are
logging in using the same username/pw etc., but the desktop is NX's; IOW
you aren't taking control of the existing users desktop, mouse etc & a
user can continue to work in _their_ desktop & won't notice that you are
running an NX session. You'll get all of the same icons, etc., etc.

For example; I'm currently logged into 3 NX's right now -- to my son's
computer in the other room, one half way around the world, and another
100 miles from me. I've performed updates on the machines, etc., etc.

Note: for filesharing you might want to have a look at this:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-users/2008-November/166974.html
[The Joys of filesharing via NX]

Or, you can simply use: Places|Connect to Server|Service Type:
SSH|Server: IP address - and you'll get the remote in your Nautilus file
manager.
