I'm running on a significantly older machine (Dell Latitude D600, 1gb
ram, 1.9ghz pentium m) but I can tell you there's a noticeable speed
difference for me between gnome and kde. You might not notice a
difference since your machine is so much faster... But get the gnome
environment in addition to kde just in case. :)
in other words, download kubuntu like Jake said, and then if that's
too slow (or you want faster!) you can apply gnome and even switch
back and forth whenever you want.
To install Gnome on Kubuntu: sudo apt-get install gnome
