Thanks for the pointer, I will have a look at this and see whether this
changes things.

I am in the process of preparing an upgrade right now, unsure whether it'll
be to 8.04 or to 9.04 as we're likely to have the machine itself
significantly upgraded and/or replaced in late 2010 so maybe we don't even
need an LTS on this. However I wondered whether I might get some diagnostics
done without, well, spending effort on doing the upgrade / re-installation
to eventually figure out there's some defect in the machine itself. ;)
