I have been using puppy linux live cd as one of my most important linux tools
for a long time, among other it has: gparted and dd, and the size is only
about 100 mb (Puppy really is a complete linux OS).
I find its is very easy to work with, as its interface is very user friendly,
but please note that it is no replacement for ubuntu.
Here is another way to install network-manager:
Download and burn puppy from here:
http://puppylinux.com/download/
Then boot with puppy live cd inserted:
Then download network-manager deb package from here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/i386/network-manager-pptp/download
Then copy the deb package from puppy into ubuntu
Then go back into ubuntu and cd to the folder where the deb package is
sitting.
Then run:
sudo apt-get install network
-manager-pptp_0.6.5+svnhead2574-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
Now network-manager should be installed again.
Above procedure princip can be used for installing other deb packages.
There is a howto about using an older version of puppy here:
http://www.minihowto.org - click on the link that begins with dd.....puppy
linux
