So your suggestion worked and i can now get a wired connection. Logging on
as a different user did not help at all. There are many suggestions in the
various replies, some of them a bit too technical for me.
Thanks for the advice and if you can tell me what I should do next to solve
the problem permanently, I'd appreciate it.
I am in Panama as a Peace Corps volunteer and have limited internet access
so if i don't reply you'll know why.
As a project I would like to introduce ubuntu/edubuntu here since it and all
the programs are free and as easy or easier to use.
