I did an update-manager install to what is now Karmic Beta (well, more
or less) but I still wonder if I got grub2. Would it only be done on
new installs?

I'm sure the electrons will be happy :). For what it's worth, updating
tonight (287 megs) did not take nearly as long as I figured it would -
although there were times initially that the throughput was too slow
for my tastes. Certainly better than this morning - my updates were
started about 7 or 8 PM (PDT). Maybe by then some of the load was
going away.
