My guess would be that the refresh rate may be causing the problem. For
example if I select a size the works for my 17" MegaImage (1024 x 768)
but change the refresh rate, I can easily see the difference in the
displayed image. At 70hz it fills the screen nicely, at 85hz it leaves
black margins of about 1/2 all around. So you might see if changing the
refresh rate provides what you want on the laptop. Note: most laptop
lcd's only seem to work well at 60hz (at least on my old clunkers). You
may have tried this already, I lost track in the other thread, but from
a terminal try:
$ xrandr
and see what the output is.

I hope that you weren't referring to Derek... he's usually pretty spot
