The changes I make to my live session don't get saved upon reboot

dude things have changed... to make the live "install" persistent (i.e. save
your changes over different sessions) you need to mess around with it a bit:

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/live-ubuntu-810-usb-persistent-install-windows/
this is for 8.10, you might want to look up a new tutorial for 9.04

but the first method I try, and the one that works without fail is to boot
up into 9.04 using the live cd, insert a usb flash drive with at least 2gb
space and go to "System >> Administration >> USB startup disk creator" where
it asks you how much space you want to set for a persistent install, I
usually give it like 1 to 2 gb so all the stuff I install stays in memory :)

hope this helps!
