ubuntu 8.10/9.04

I am new to Ubuntu and need some help.  Tried to load 8.10 from cd.  Installed up to line 132.784602 buffer I/O error on dev sdb, logical block 0.  Froze there. 

Tried to install 9.04 from cd.  Installed up to detecting file systems.  Received error report: input/output error during read on dev sdb.  Using intel quad 2, 8mb memory,

maxtor 6y200p0 hard drive.
