Just some thoughts:
1. /dev/sdb may be going bad or have some bad blocks.
2. I presume you are using the live CD rather than the Alternate CD. May have better luck with the alternate.
3.Did you burn your own CD? Run the md5sum on the downloaded iso file. Run the md5sum on the burnt CD and run the integrety check on the CD bootup.
4. you may have a bad CD or failing drive.
5. Check /var/log for installation errors
and report any relevant info
6. Better help could be given with more explicit info from you.
