Compaq Presario Realtek RTL8139 not working

Tried both 8.04 and Jaunty but neither work with this Realtek network 
card on this Compaq Presario.

I look at all network settings and for all intent and purpose the 
network should be working, but it's not.  No connection wired or 
otherwise.  Install XP and everything works.

Anyone have a problem with this integrated network device?  It seems to 
be supported but Ubuntu even list the correct name and number.

Help save my kids computer from XP!
