How to get icons working(netbook-launcher desktop) for self-compiled apps.

I'm not exactly sure what you are after, but have you tried to right
click the desktop and select ”Create starter…” (or something like
that; I run Ubuntu in Swedish…)? Then you can assign your own icon
(could be a picture of any kind) to it.
