Pine correctly supports the PGP/MIME, does it not? Maybe I am  
confusing it with mutt...

Either way, if you insist on signing the message, PGP/MIME attachments  
are at least less obtrusive. I know for a fact that Enigmail supports  
using it instead of inline.
