Actually googling revealed that other people have had the same problem.
Apparently a race condition can develop between DHCP and the network
manager. I don't have much experience reading the bug tracker but it
looks like a bug was filed and confirmed and then maybe cleared and then
refiled. A number of scripting workarounds were suggested. I am not
experienced enough to try them, the info you gave me will work fine for
me until a fix is in place.
